Chilaw CC continues to dominate the Puttalam District tournament with an unbelievable record from Chilaw Cricket club of 554 runs in 50 overs match in division III tournament.
Ten time district champs have gone from strength to strength in the last 15 years.
Chilaw Cricket Club continued its ruthless campaign with a soul-crushing 445-run win over EverGreen Cricket Club in the ongoing first round of the Puttalam District Cricket Tournament.
Batting first under partially cloudy skies after winning the toss, the Chilaw team amassed a scarcely believable 554 runs for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. In a rare occurrence at any level of cricket in the 50-over format, three of the Chilaw batters scored hundreds including Dileepa Sandamal (141 in 73 balls), Captain Tharindu Indunil (119 in 59 balls) and Mohammed Akmal (126 not out in 45 balls). The fact that all three scored their runs at a combined strike rate of nearly 220 is even more astonishing. There may have been no rain around, but it was certainly raining sixers – 26 of them to be exact – with one six hit every 12 balls.
From the Evergreen bowlers, only Madesha Deneth escaped the apocalyptic batting display with some. respectable figures of 3 for 79 in his ten overs.
Facing a near-impossible task chasing at more than 11 runs an over, the Evergreen batters never looked threatening at any point during their innings with only Tirun Fernando passing 20. The rest of the batters wilted against the fresh Chilaw bowlers for just 109 runs in 34.1 overs. From the Chilaw bowlers, Hansiri Bandara stood out with 4 wickets while Asanka Kumara claimed 2 wickets.
This was as dominant a display put on by the Chilaw team over its history of 68 years. Since its inception in 1955, the club has faced many hardships over the decades. However, the leadership, perseverance, and vision of many stalwarts in the past ensured that Chilaw Cricket Club stands tall to this day. Under the guidance of the late Mr. Savior Perera who was the coach of St. Mary’s College Chilaw and Chilaw CC, the Club became Puttalam district champions 10 times and entered the all-island semi-finals twice.
The performances of the Chilaw team on the field are a reflection of how well the Club is administered and managed off the field. The club is run by an Executive Committee headed by the President Priyantha Chandrasekara. The Secretary of the Club Saman Thiththagalla is also the current coach of the side and has played first-class level cricket in Sri Lanka.
It is fair to say that Chilaw Cricket Club stands tall above all other clubs in the district and is on its way to becoming a force to be reckoned with at the national level. (D.R)
