The Committee on Public Finance has approved the 2027 budget estimates of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), following a review at a recent committee meeting.
The meeting was held in Parliament recently under the chairmanship of MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, with CIABOC Director General Ranga Dissanayake and officials from the Finance Ministry and Attorney General’s Department in attendance.
The committee discussed the commission’s financial and operational independence, funding structure and administrative matters. It also examined delays in submitting the commission’s 2027 budget estimates and agreed that, from next year, the estimates should be submitted to the Speaker by May 30 to avoid delays in the national budget process.
The committee also discussed restrictions affecting the commission’s operations, including vehicle purchases and leasing, renting buildings for regional offices and overseas travel for official duties.
CIABOC said it is expanding its operations in line with commitments under the International Monetary Fund program and the country’s anti-corruption action plan. The commission plans to recruit 971 staff members and establish 23 regional offices by Dec. 31, 2026.
According to the Director General, nearly 34,000 individuals required to declare their assets and liabilities under the new Anti-Corruption Act have been identified for the collection of late fees. The fines collected through the process will be credited to the commission’s fund. (Newswire)
