The Criminal Investigation Department reported yesterday (5) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis that an investigation was started regarding a large-scale human trafficking of Sri Lankan minors via India to Malaysia.
The Criminal Investigation Department has submitted facts to the Court that 28 children between the ages of 5 and 17 years, hailing from North and East have been taken from this country to Malaysia and these children have not returned to this country.
A complaint regarding this incident was submitted to the Criminal Investigation and Trafficking Investigation Department by the Authorized Officer (Investigation) of the Immigration and Emigration Department Chandima Manuja Munasinghe on April 19.
The Criminal Investigation Department has reported to the Court that the complainant came to their department and gave a statement regarding the incident, and that they had received an e-mail message also from the British High Commission regarding this.
According to the data of the e-mail message, the complainant stated that 28 children in the age groups of 5 to 17 years in the Northern and Eastern provinces of the country left the country with their mothers or alone and went to India, and later only the mothers returned to the country.
The Criminal Investigation Department reported to the Court that information has been revealed that the children going from India to Malaysia are being taken by a Malaysian woman after submitting false documents to the country’s Immigration Controller.
Information has been revealed that the form kept at the airport by the Immigration Department was filled by one person when these children were sent abroad, and the Criminal Investigation Department told Court that it has obtained information about that person.
As this offence comes under Sections 360 and 398 of the Penal Code, the Criminal Investigation Department requested the Court to adjourn the case until the suspects related to the incident are immediately arrested and brought to Court.
