Coach summoned to police over alleged substandard landing mats exposure

An athletics coach was summoned to the Cinnamon Gardens Police on Friday (02) to record a statement over his exposure of an alleged purchase of low-quality high jump landing mats by the Ministry of Sports.

The summons follows a complaint lodged by a Sports Ministry official after coach Priyantha Tantrige took members of the media to the Torrington grounds in Colombo to highlight the issue, without permission.

Speaking to the media, Tantrige said that exposing substandard equipment should not be treated as an offence, adding that an inquiry should instead be conducted into the procurement process of the mats.

He reiterated that the landing mats supplied were of poor quality, claiming they were made using materials commonly used for conventional bed mattresses and were unsuitable for athletics events, posing a serious safety risk to athletes.

Tantrige had earlier criticised the Ministry of Sports at the Torrington grounds for supplying what he described as substandard landing mats for high jump events. (NewsWire)
