Committed to resolving issues in pharma sector – Minister Dr. Jayatissa

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa emphasised the Government’s commitment to addressing issues in the pharmaceutical sector, which is currently seen as both a highly profitable industry and one prone to malpractice. He assured support and security for all employees striving to resolve these challenges and implement necessary corrections.

The Minister expressed these views during an inspection tour at the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) office at the ‘Mehewara Piyasa’ complex in Narahenpita. Dr. Jayatissa held discussions with the SPC Chairman and the Board of Directors to streamline operations and improve transparency within the institution. The SPC, with over 53 years of service, is tasked with promoting affordable, safe and high-quality pharmaceuticals to enhance the country’s healthcare system.

The Minister also reviewed the pharmaceutical supply chain, its operational efficiency and the current procurement and distribution processes. He provided guidance to the management on improving these systems. Attention was also directed toward institutional social responsibilities, laboratory facilities, pre- and post-market quality certifications, awareness programmes and human resource development within the SPC.

Dr. Jayatissa inspected each division of the SPC office and engaged with staff to understand their challenges and concerns.

Reiterating the Government’s dedication, the minister encouraged SPC employees to remain steadfast in their efforts to address issues in the pharmaceutical sector while ensuring their safety and well-being.

Health and Mass Media Deputy Minister Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, SPC Chairman Dr. Manuj C. Weerasinghe, and Managing Director M. L. Subasingha Arachchi were also present.
