The Cabinet of Ministers has granted its consent to the proposal forward by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as the Justice, Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government Minister to appoint a committee to submit a detailed report within two months with suitable recommendations to limit on a rational basis the entitlements, allowances and privileges of MPs, Ministers and former Presidents.
Speaking to the media yesterday at the Government Information Department Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Vijitha Herath said that the committee consisting of retired Supreme Court Judge, K.T.Chithrasiri (Chairman),Retired Ministry Secretary D.Dissanayaka and Retired District Secretary Jayantha Bulumulla to submit the report on these expenses which creates an unnecessary burden on the Treasury or to introduce other suitable alternative method.
Members of Parliament, Ministers and Ex-Presidents who are elected by the people, have been granted various entitlements, allowances, and privileges such as salaries, allowances, pensions, quarters, vehicles, staff, office equipment and security personnel, he said.
Minister Herath further added that the government has to bear a significant cost annually from the public tax to provide the said various entitlements, allowances, and privileges and the government has recognised the necessity of minimisation of this huge expenditure at the present fiscal capacity.
