Committee to update prison regulations following monks’ concerns holds first meeting

The special committee appointed to review and update regulations and standing orders under Sri Lanka’s Prisons Ordinance has held its first meeting at the Presidential Secretariat.

The committee was appointed following discussions between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and members of the Maha Sangha representing the three Nikayas on Oct. 8.

The meeting was held on Friday afternoon (Oct. 9), with officials from the ministries of Buddhasasana, Justice and Public Administration, as well as the Department of Buddhist Affairs and Department of Prisons, participating.

The committee is chaired by Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Secretary Prince Senadheera.

Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara provided policy guidance to the committee, according to the President’s Media Division.

The committee was established after concerns were raised over existing prison rules governing the treatment of Buddhist monks while in custody and when being taken outside prison. (Newswire)
