Compensation system for crop damage on the cards

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne announced that all farmland will soon be brought under a protection system, and a compensation mechanism will be developed to address crop damage.

The Deputy Minister made this statement in response to an oral question raised by MP Rohana Bandara in Parliament yesterday (17).

Emphasising the importance of improving farmers’ living conditions, the Deputy Minister highlighted plans to provide loans at subsidised interest rates and to enhance the Farmers’ Pension Fund. He further assured that steps would be taken to compensate farmers whose crops have been damaged.

The Deputy Minister also noted that the fertilizer subsidy of Rs. 25,000 per hectare is currently being provided to farmers. Acknowledging delays in disbursing the funds, he assured that the issue will be resolved by the next season.

Additionally, he stated that farmers who have not yet received the fertilizer subsidy will receive their payments within the next few days.
