The Election Commission (EC) stated that it is illegal to conduct election campaigns using digital screens in any city or district in the country.
The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake said that if any such election campaigning activity for the upcoming Parliamentary Election taking place is observed anywhere, people should inform the nearest Police station about such incidents.
“If any kind of election propaganda is being done on a digital screen in your district, in your city, please inform the nearest police station and the police will act accordingly. This is a completely illegal act which forces people to get involved in such political propaganda related to the 2024 Parliamentary Election.
Paying for or displaying advertisements is prohibited, as it is equivalent to putting up a poster in a public space. Therefore, broadcasting election related advertisements on digital screens is entirely forbidden”, the Election Commissioner General said.
The Election Commissioner also said that during previous elections, Court rulings had reinforced this stance and therefore, the Election Commission will refer the Court on such incidents of violating the election law accordingly as necessary.
Ratnayake also said that if any candidate attempts to obtain votes through undue influence, such a candidate should be reported to the Election office or to the nearest Police station of the relevant district.
