Container clearance at Colombo Port to be streamlined

Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Janith Ruwan Kodithuwakku yesterday said that efforts are underway to streamline the clearance process for containers at the Colombo Port.

Currently, the port receives 1,600 to 2,000 containers daily. A separate process has been initiated to scan and release around 600 to 700 containers from companies coming under the Board of Investment (BOI).

He also said that necessary parking slots have been created for the containers.

“Due to a lack of infrastructure development over the years, the volume of transshipment in our port does not meet the required standards.”

The Deputy Minister further stated that by the end of February, they plan to establish a temporary yard capable of handling 300 containers.

The Container Transport Owners Association reported that 1,100 container trucks remain stranded at the port and Customs.

There are also around 4,000 containers with imported goods held at the Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) yard.
