Controversy over Ravi K’s nomination to National List seat

The National Unity Alliance (NUA) has written to the Election Commission (EC) yesterday (18), appealing to the EC to refrain from issuing a Gazette announcing former minister Ravi Karunanayake as a National List MP of the National Democratic Front (NDF).

The NUA, which is one of the constituent parties in the NDF alliance, has stated in its letter to the EC that the nomination of Ravi Karunanayake as one of the national list MPs of the NDF has been made by the NDF party Secretary without the consensus or approval of the other NDF alliance parties, including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the NUA, breaching the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NDF and its other coalition parties.

In its letter to the EC, the NUA has stated that there have been many unpleasant and unlawful incidents that have been reported over the filling of the national list seats, which has led to many controversies.

The NUA has stated that the nomination of Ravi Karunanayake from the NDF National List is unlawful and arbitrary, and that NUA plans to initiate legal action against the nomination.

NUA leader Azath Salley, in the letter to the EC, requested the EC to refrain from gazetting Ravi Karunanayake’s name as a national list MP from the NDF without confirming the validity of the letter sent by the NDF Secretary to the EC, with the rest of the parties in the NDF alliance.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who led the NDF campaign for the 2024 Parliamentary Election, has said that he had no knowledge of the letter sent by the NDF party secretary to the EC nominating Ravi Karunanayake as one of the two NDF national list MPs.
