Country’s strongest coalition formed around ‘Gas Cylinder’ symbol to support President – MP Asanka Navaratne

Sri Lanka’s largest political alliance in history has formed around the symbol of the Gas Cylinder, rallying for the victory of President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming Presidential Election. More groups are expected to join in the coming days, revealed Leader of Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and MP, Asanka Navarathna.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Thursday (5) at President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political office in Flower Road, Colombo, MP Asanka Navarathna also stated that a significant majority of votes were cast in favour of President Wickremesinghe during postal voting by State employees.

Leader of Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and Kurunegala District MP Navaratne also noted that it has been about 20 days since the nomination process for the Presidential Election began, and President Wickremesinghe’s independent campaign has gained increasing traction among the public each day. He emphasised that their party, as public representatives, has observed this growing support.

“On the previous day, postal voting by State employees began. It is reported that the majority of State employees have cast their votes in favour of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Although some candidates claimed that the majority of the Sri Lanka Police voted for him, this statement has now been proven false.

“Currently, the largest political coalition in Sri Lankan history has been formed around the Gas Cylinder symbol to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s victory. More groups are expected to join this coalition in the coming days.

“As the leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, it is important to state our position. Our party has decided to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe to continue the progress made over the past two years and to ensure strong economic stability. He is the only leader capable of achieving these objectives.

Despite Opposition claims, a clear pathway has been established for President Wickremesinghe to secure a decisive victory. The general public, though quiet, has made their decision. The President’s actions have earned the trust of the people, demonstrating effective governance through the most severe crisis the country has faced”.

Nawa Janasetha Peramuna Leader Gamini Wijenayake: “During the country’s economic decline, no leader was attuned to the people’s suffering – except for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took on the crucial task of national recovery. His effective handling of this responsibility has been clearly demonstrated. As a result, our party has decided to support President Wickremesinghe.

“Currently, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s actions suggest that he is damaging his father’s legacy. In the past, leaders like R. Premadasa and J. R. Jayewardene worked diligently for the success of their leadership and party, even in challenging times.

“However, Sajith Premadasa seems driven by personal ambition and a rush for power, raising concerns about the risk of the country sliding further into economic and political instability.

“At that time, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa received a mandate from 6.9 million people. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa appears intent on returning the country to the state it was in before that mandate. I urge Sajith Premadasa not to lead the country back to such an unfortunate position.

“I request Sajith not to cause further distress to the suffering populace. Additionally, we are aware of the damage caused by Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s JVP. Both Sajith and Anura seem to be working together to push the country toward a risky situation. Sajith Premadasa cannot defeat Anura Kumara; their actions appear to indirectly support each other.

“Neither Anura nor Sajith is capable of advancing the current president’s agenda, nor can they defeat him. The people at the grassroots level have recognised this, and they will cast their votes for the ‘Gas Cylinder’. No one can stop it. The loud Opposition of today will eventually fade away.

“If Sajith damages our voter base, he must bear responsibility for the country’s future. The suffering people will hold him accountable, and he may never recover politically. This is the prevailing sentiment among the public today. Should the country revert to the conditions of Gotabaya’s rule, the people will not tolerate it, and Sajith will have to exit the political arena.

Looking ahead, I urge everyone to cast their vote for President Ranil Wickremesinghe on September 21, marking your vote in front of the ‘Gas Cylinder’. Re-electing him will ensure stable leadership for the next five years and secure the country’s progress.”
