Couple absconding, defrauded millions promising houses

The Special Crimes Investigation Division of the Kandy Police is conducting investigations to arrest a couple who are in hiding, subsequent to deceiving a number of people of Rs. 50 million, while maintaining a property trade company at Mahaiyawa, on the Kandy-Katugastota main road, saying that they will construct houses.

During Police investigations it has been revealed that the suspected couple have been operating an education institute as well, in conjunction with the property sales organization.

According to the Police, this couple who had been residing in a rented house in Katugastota, have left that particular house and moved out taking with them the millions of rupees obtained from customers. The couple have been identified as Jude Fernando and Sreemathi Tissakumari and if there is any information about them, Police request the public to inform the nearest Police station.

During the time this couple had launched their business, they had provided a good service to customers and subsequent to building up their trust, they had begun defrauding them of money.

This fact had been discovered during investigations.

Police said that, after showing the plans of houses proposed to be built on lands located in very attractive places, to the customers, they had obtained advances in lakhs of rupees from them saying to give them the respective houses, after construction work was completed.

It has been reported that the lands that had been shown to customers belonged to other people. As of now, nine persons who had been deceived by this couple have lodged complaints with the Special Crimes Investigation Unit of the Kandy Police and the money they had paid the suspects is about Rs.50 million.

It has been found that the suspect couple had rented the two-storied building where the business was being carried out in Mahaiyawa, Kandy for Rs.300,000. Police stated that there are persons who have paid ten million rupees as an advance, among complainants.

Investigations are being carried out regarding this incident under the directions of Chief Inspector Rasika Sampath.
