The Ambalantota Police arrested a couple who had entered the Ambalantota Divisional Secretariat, opened the safe and stole Rs. 1.9 million on Tuesday (11). Police said that Sarath Mathangaweera (49) and Antonige Renuka (35), a married couple from Malpettawa Ambalantota, have been arrested. There had been two keys to open the safe in the Ambalantota Divisional Secretariat. Those two keys had been in the possession of two officers. Investigations had revealed that the two officers kept those two keys in the office. Police said that on September 26, they had entered the Divisional Secretariat at night, opened the safe and had stolen Rs.1.9 million and Rs.12,148.50.
The security officer of the Divisional Secretariat was the first person arrested by Police in connection with this theft.
Subsequent to a lengthy investigation, information had been received regarding this couple. Both of them were arrested later.
It has also been revealed that a person from Walasmulla who was in close association with the arrested couple had committed this theft. A high-ranking police officer said that part of the stolen money had been given to these people, and that the main suspect had been depositing some of the money from time to time in a bank account belonging to him.
The Police said that the main suspect is currently in hiding. The couple had told the police that they do not know any information about him.
It has been revealed that the person had been visiting the couple’s house prior to committing the theft and even brought a tab computer for the daughter. Apart from that, the police also said that other gifts had been given to the children.Police said further that a tab computer given to the daughter had also been taken into their custody. The arrested suspect couple was to be presented before the Hambantota Magistrate.
