The Fort Magistrate’s Court has ordered authorities to take necessary steps to obtain an INTERPOL Red Notice against former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa in connection with the alleged misuse of funds belonging to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.
Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the order today (14), directing that a warrant be issued in both Sinhala and English to facilitate the process of obtaining a Red Notice through INTERPOL.
The Magistrate also ordered the Illegal Assets Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to arrest Basil Rajapaksa and produce him before court.
The orders were issued following submissions made by the CID regarding the ongoing investigation.
The case relates to allegations that Rs. 7.8 million allocated to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau in 2014 was misused to provide 12,000 T-shirts for the Uva Provincial Council election, instead of being spent on the Bureau’s promotional activities.
The CID’s Illegal Assets Unit had previously reported facts to court, alleging that the misuse of the funds had caused a financial loss to the government. (Newswire)
