Authorities of the Monaragala Hospital had mistakenly released a COVID-19 infected body to the deceased’s family members, it was reported yesterday.
The deceased, a 77-year-old woman of the Minipuragama area in Okkampitiya, Buttala had died while receiving treatment at the Monaragala Hospital recenlty.
The authorities had later informed the family members that the body is COVID-19 positive and then had taken steps to bring it back for cremation while it was being prepared for final rites at the residence.
However, nearly 200 individuals had visited the house to pay their last respects to the remains. The family members have been quarantined at their respective homes by the health authorities.
