CPC’s fuel imports in 2022/2023 under the scanner

President’s Secretary orders CID probe at CPC Chairman’s request

Allegations that some persons profited during era of fuel queues to be probed

Forensic audit into transactions during this period to be done

President’s Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake has informed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately conduct an investigation into the irregularities that occurred during the importation of fuel to Sri Lanka in the 2022/2023 period.

This has been done on a request made by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Chairman D. J. Rajakaruna.

Accordingly, Rajakaruna stated that the CID had already inquired about the basic facts from him and obtained a statement.

The Chairman also said that in addition to the investigations carried out by the CID, he has instructed to carry out a forensic audit on the transactions for the relevant period.

The Chairman recalled that for the first time in the history of the Sri Lankan economy, in 2022 it was announced that the country has become bankrupt and the CPC also faced unprecedented difficulties and fuel queues came to be the order of the day due to lack of foreign exchange to buy fuel.

Rajakaruna emphasized that despite such an unfortunate situation in the country, this investigation is being conducted as a preliminary step to find out the truth about allegations that some former authorities used the crisis as a springboard to earn money.

The CPC Chairman said if anyone is found guilty of misconduct, appropriate action will be taken.
