The Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club (CR&FC) celebrates its centenary year commencing 25th September 2022.
The centenary committee chaired by past president and honorary life member Jehan CanagaRetna has organised a broad range of activities to celebrate the occasion. The club has continued to show good citizenry by supporting economically vulnerable communities in the area.
Recently, the club distributed supermarket vouchers to sixty families in the “Hate`watte” (sixty-compound) community on Torrington Avenue.
During the height of the Covid-19 outbreak on several occasions , the club distributed over one-hundred ration packs each time containing rice, dhal, eggs, milk-powder, tea leaves, sugar, Salt, dry fish, canned fish and reusable masks.
Club president Ted Hiran Muttiah, Centenary Committee Chairman Jehan CanagaRentna, General Manager Group Captain (retired) Lalith Abeysekera and men’s team captain Kavindhu de Costa along with CR&FC men’s and CR&FC players are seen distributing vouchers to a very grateful community at “Hate`watte”.
A “Hate`watte” community elder speaking on the occasion said “the CR has been here longer than many in this area. The club is highly respected for it care for people like us in times of difficulties. CR is our club. We support the club, and the club supports us”
Club president Muttiah said “the CR&FC remains true to its founding charter. It is primarily a rugby club.
Fundamentally, sport is a vehicle for promoting universally accepted values of human behaviour. In the longer term, compassion and empathy for fellow human beings is far more enriching than any trophy in the club cabinet”
