Cricketer Lahiru Thirimanna, three others injured in car accident

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Lahiru Thirimanna and four others including his mother were injured in a car accident yesterday morning (14) when their car and a lorry collided head-on near the 117th kilometer post on the Kandy-Jaffna A-9 road in Tirappane and were admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The accident had occurred when the car carrying Lahiru Thirimanna, which was travelling from Kekirawa towards Anuradhapura, collided head-on with a lorry travelling from Anuradhapura to Maradankadawala area.

Police said that the Lahiru Thirimanna who was travelling in the car sustained bruises on his abdomen, the mother’s hip area had been injured and the car driver and the lorry driver had also sustained injuries in the accident. After admitting the four injured in the accident to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, three of them including Lahiru Thirimanna are being treated in the Anuradhapura Hospital and the mother is being treated in Ward 4 of the same hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said that their condition is not serious. Police said the accident had taken place yesterday (14) at around 7.40 am and it is suspected that the car veered to the south direction due to the driver falling asleep.

Police said that the car and the lorry were badly damaged in the accident.

The front wheels of the lorry had come off and rolled away and fallen down a slight slope.
