Customs arrest two with contraband on arrival at airport

Two persons who tried to smuggle 45,400 foreign made cigarettes worth Rs. 4.5 million to Sri Lanka were arrested Monday (18) at the arrival terminal of Katunayake Airport by a group of customs officials, said Customs Director Seevali Arukgoda.

These two persons were in possession of 227 cartons of cigarettes when arrested.

One of these suspects is a businesswoman from Yatiyanthota. Other suspect is a businessman from Kalmunai. These two persons engaged in a business bringing goods from abroad and sell them in Sri Lanka.

All the cigarettes were confiscated after the formal customs investigation and the man was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 100,000. In addition, the businesswoman has been thoroughly warned and released.
