Customs foil attempt to smuggle Rs 10 M worth of ‘goods’

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday (9) foiled an attempt by an incoming passenger attempting to smuggle goods worth approximately Rs 10 million.

The suspect attempted to exit the airport through the ‘Green Channel’ designated for incoming passengers with no items to declare. The suspect, a 44-year-old businessman from the Negombo area, is involved in importing goods by air for resale.

He arrived at 4:50 am on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226 from Dubai. Upon inspection of his four pieces of luggage, Customs officers discovered 152 smartphones, 5 tablet computers, 38 bottles of a variety of whiskys, 44 electronic cigarettes, and a large quantity of cigarettes. The suspect is currently in custody, while further investigations are being conducted by the Customs.
