Addressing the event, High Commissioner Santosh Jha described the flagship deep water container terminal built through a joint partnership of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, John Keells Holdings, and Adani Ports and SEZ with an investment of approximately USD 750 million as one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Sri Lanka’s maritime sector in recent years. He noted that achieving the two million TEU mark in record time reflects a combined effort of Sri Lankan and Indian expertise and capital driven by a shared vision.
The High Commissioner emphasized that major global shipping lines are placing confidence in CWIT due to its efficiency, automated technology, electric terminal vehicles, smart operating systems, and a 20-metre deep water draft capable of accommodating mega container ships. He commended the development of local skills, job creation, and the significant participation of women in the terminal’s high-tech operations.
Pointing to India’s robust economic growth with real Gross Domestic Product expanding by 7.8% alongside nearly 12% growth in investment and exports in the first quarter of the financial year High Commissioner Jha underscored that growing trade and cargo will further strengthen maritime links between the two countries, positioning Colombo Port as a key partner in the region.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, Adani Ports and SEZ CEO Ashwani Gupta, John Keells Holdings CEO Krishan Balendra and CWIT CEO Munish Kanwar were also present.
