The Department of Meteorology said that in the North and North Central Provinces and in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts, rain or thundershowers will occur from time to time and heavy rains of more than 75 mm may occur in some places in these areas.
After 1.00 pm in the rest of the island, scattered rain or thundershowers may occur. In the Western and North Western Provinces and the Galle and Matara districts, rain may also occur in the morning. Due to this situation, in the next 48 hours the seas off the coasts from Mannar to Kankesanturai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa to Pottuvil, Galle and Matara will be rough and the Met Department has issued a red warning to the Naval and fishing communities.
The low pressure depression that existed in the Southwest Bay of Bengal developed into Cyclone Michaung by 5.30 am yesterday (3) and was located about 325 km Northeast of Jaffna. The Met Department expects that Cyclone Michaung will move north-westwards from the north coast of the country and then move northwards and make landfall on the coast of South Andhra Pradesh by tomorrow (5).
According to the report of the Disaster Management Centre, 221 people from 75 families in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts have been affected due to the bad weather.
