Children and adults should take steps to avoid lightning firecrackers while holding them by hand and be cautious about firework displays during the festive season, said Kelaniya University Senior Lecturer, Ophthalmologist K.A.Salvin

He stated that there is a risk of losing one’s life by lightning firecrackers and other   firework displays. He said that one may lose an eye and become disabled for life if he does not exercise caution when lightening firecrackers.

He also said that in order to avoid these accidents, it is important to direct the money spent on crackers and firework displays to charity or children’s homes or elders’ homes.

He was speaking at a press conference held at the National Eye Hospital under the theme ‘Let’s save our eyes from firecracker accidents’ yesterday.

He said that the aim of this awareness is to reduce hospitalization due to eye accidents and carelessness.

The most common injuries caused by fireworks are injuries to hands and fingers. Survey data has revealed that 17 percent of these accidents happen to the eyes, while another 17 percent affect the face and head.

The most common firework accident is burns, which mostly affect the surface of the eye. Accidents to aspies directly affect the protection of the cornea, and prolonged dry eye can even cause corneal injuries.
