Daughter remanded over matricide in Kahawatta

Pelmadulla Magistrate Nuthinan Siriwardena yesterday (22) remanded the youngest daughter, who was arrested by the police on suspicion of the murder of the mother of three children until January 1. The Kahawatta Police arrested this woman in connection with the murder of Vineetha Jayasundara (71), a mother of three, and a resident of Welewatta, Welladura, Kahawatta on December 13.

Kahawatta Police’s Criminal Investigation Division OIC Inspector N.G. Karunathilaka presenting facts to court and stated that the technical examination of the security camera footage and phone call records regarding this murder has not yet been completed.

Police informed court that one of the two mobile phones of Vineetha was missing and investigations are being conducted on that and two calls received on those phones.

Police said that they also investigated the phone calls received on the suspect’s phone and that no call had been received by her for two hours on the day of the murder.

Police also reported to court that on the day the crime occurred, the suspect had worked at the Kahawatta Divisional Secretariat. While working, she took ten thousand rupees from an ATM machine and gave five thousand rupees to a friend in that office.

The investigation revealed that the suspect reported for duty at 11.15 in the morning and left the office at 3.31 in the afternoon.Police investigations revealed that the murdered woman and the suspect’s daughter lived in the same house.

The suspect was referred to a psychiatrist to obtain a psychiatric report.

The suspect told Police that she had seen her mother murdered at the back of the house, when she returned home from work.
