David Pieris Group joins national beach cleaning initiative

As part of its ongoing commitment to social welfare and environmental sustainability, David Pieris Group recently took the lead in cleaning an 850-metre stretch of Thalaramba Beach in Kamburugamuwa, Matara.

This beach cleanup effort was part of the government’s larger initiative to enhance the cleanliness and appeal of Sri Lanka’s coastline, which spans from Puttalam to Hambantota. The cleanup occurred near the Group’s Matara Operations Centre and was coordinated in partnership with the Marine Environment Protection Authority’s (MEPA) Matara District Office.

In addition to the company’s staff, twelve undergraduates from the University of Ruhuna also participated, working together to remove waste and debris, contributing to a cleaner environment and improving the region’s appeal for both locals and tourists. This initiative reflects David Pieris Group’s dedication to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The company’s involvement in this national beach cleaning project aligns with its broader environmental goals and ongoing contributions to Sri Lanka’s growing tourism industry. In recognition of its strong environmental focus, David Pieris Group was awarded the Presidential Environmental Award 2024 (Merit) in the Vehicle Servicing Centre category.

The Group received a Gold Award for ‘Best CSR Programme in the Private Sector for Women’s Empowerment’ at the Top 50 Professional and Career Women Awards – Ninth Edition (Sri Lanka & Maldives) in 2019.

The Group’s environmental and social welfare initiatives go beyond beach cleanups. They also include donating fully equipped houses to low-income families, providing medical equipment to hospitals, offering financial aid to individuals with critical illnesses and disabilities, improving public transport in rural areas, and empowering women through entrepreneurship training programmes.
