Death in custody: SC orders OIC to pay Rs.475,000

The Supreme Court ruled that basic human rights had been violated due to the death of a suspect in police custody by police firing in 2008, and ordered the then OIC of the Kompannaveediya Police, including a group of officers, to pay Rs.475,000 to the wife of the deceased. It was decided that the fundamental rights guaranteed by the provisions of 12(1), 13(4) of the Constitution have been violated by the incident in question. In addition, the government was ordered to pay a compensation of Rs.250,000 to the woman.

The Inspector General of Police was also ordered to report to court on March 24 about the actions taken regarding this order.
