The death toll from the Deduru Oya tragedy has risen to six after four more bodies were recovered during search operations in Kobeyigane.
Police said the incident occurred when a group of 15 went to bathe in the river at Kuritiyagahamulamankade.
Strong currents swept several members away. Among the victims were four men, two women, and three schoolchildren.
Two survivors, a man and a woman, were rescued and admitted to Nikaweratiya Hospital.
The bodies of a 70‑year‑old man and a 34‑year‑old woman were initially recovered, followed by four more victims, raising the toll to six.
Search efforts continue for two men aged 39 and 72, a woman aged 42, and three children aged 9, 13, and 18.
Rescue teams, supported by police and naval units, are continuing operations to locate the missing. (Newswire)
