Deputy Minister says Wimal Weerawansa fooled by AI image

Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe has criticized former MP Wimal Weerawansa for displaying an allegedly AI-manipulated photograph during a television discussion, claiming that the former minister was misled by a fabricated image.

In a social media post, Abeysinghe shared what he described as the original photograph alongside the allegedly manipulated version, accusing Weerawansa of using the altered image to make political allegations.

Abeysinghe explained that the original photograph showed him with a person identified as Amal, who had helped protect protesters from an attack by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters during the 2022 Aragalaya protest movement.

He said Amal was among a small group of individuals who confronted the attackers before others arrived at the protest site.

According to Abeysinghe, the photograph was taken in recognition of Amal’s actions during the incident.

However, he alleged that the image had subsequently been manipulated using artificial intelligence to portray Amal as a Buddhist monk.

Abeysinghe questioned how an experienced politician such as Weerawansa could be misled by an AI-generated image and proceed to discuss it extensively on a major television channel.

He also accused Weerawansa and his political allies of relying on ethnic and religious divisions in their political activities.

The Deputy Minister’s remarks have drawn attention to the growing concerns surrounding AI-generated images and their potential use in political discussions. (Newswire)
