Deserving families to be settled in 4,074 flats in Colombo

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga instructed officials to take immediate action to settle beneficiaries in 4,074 housing units at six housing complexes being built in connection with the Support to Colombo Urban Regeneration Project (SCURP).

The Minister gave these instructions in a meeting held recently in the Ministry Auditorium regarding these projects.The Minister also said that special attention should be paid to aspects such as social protection and livelihood development of the people who are settled in the flats. He said that guidelines should be provided to settlers with the participation of the public and private sectors.

These housing complex projects are being implemented in Colomboge Mawatha, Stadiumgama, Appalwatta, Ferguson Road, Obeysekarapura and Madampitiya areas to accommodate the low-income earners in Colombo district, and each house will be 550 square feet.The Asian Infrastructure Development Bank provides financial support for this project. A legal deed for the respective house and property, free water-electricity connection, livelihood breakdown allowance, and financial and other assistance allowances are offered to the beneficiaries of these flats.

The Minister said that those who raise cattle and chickens should also be given some space in housing complexes to continue their livelihood. He also instructed officials to issue the title deeds to the owners of the houses before the end of this year.
