The Health Ministry has introduced a special telephone number, 1907, to provide information regarding individuals posing as doctors.
There are about 40,000 quacks across the country, posing significant risks to public health, according to Dr. Haritha Aluthge, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Secretary.
He made this statement during a press conference held at the GMOA office on Friday(17).
As a result of continuous interventions and proposals by the GMOA, the Health Ministry and the Justice Ministry have initiated the process of establishing two committees to coordinate and plan activities at the Health Ministry level.
These committees aim to revise and strengthen the existing legal framework regarding fake doctors. Dr.Aluthge also mentioned that several positive measures have been implemented recently, such as the enforcement of raid teams, including health medical officers and the active participation of the Sri Lanka Police in cracking down on fake doctors.
Additionally, he announced that a national awareness week will be launched in the future to educate the public about this issue.
