Digital ecosystem can play a significant role not only in presenting solutions to the current economic crisis but also widening the scope of the country’s earnings, said President Ranil Wickremesinghe delivering a special message to the Sri Lanka Internet Day.
Towards this he said that it is the duty of the Government to have the necessary framework in place, to foster and develop digitalization in all its forms and extend the ensuing possibilities to all. “I also believe that the country’s industry leaders should work in tandem with the State in keeping abreast of the global developments in this field of digitalization, in order to formulate and implement a comprehensive national framework in this sphere. I am thankful to the UNDP for its assistance in Sri Lanka’s quest for digitalization.”
“The world is on the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution, and with rapid automation there is much fear that millions could either lose jobs, or be compelled to secure low waged placements due to not being equipped with the necessary training or skills.
“While the internet and digitalization may present extensive opportunities, they could also be a threat to nations like ours which are vulnerable, and can get left behind if we do not move at the same pace, as the world goes through rapid development in this area.”
“It is imperative to take strength in our national pride in what we do and the recent National Fuel Pass QR code which was introduced and the manner in which it positively facilitated the people in the purchase of fuel and easing off the queues, is a good example.”
