Dinara bags grand double at Tennis Nationals

Promising Dinara de Silva completed a fine double at the 108th National Tennis Championships, which continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

The schoolgirl from St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo added another feather to her cap by winning the Girls’ Under-16 final following her success in the Girls’ Under-18 final on the previous day.

The top seed Dinara, who beat Saajida Razick in the Girls’ Under-18 final, produced another fine performance and had the better of the seventh seed Ruvi Lewkebandara in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the Girls’ Under-16 final.

Meanwhile, the bottom seed Methwan Wijemanne continued with his excellent form as he defeated the top seed Ganuka Fernando in the Boys’ Under-16 final encounter.

Results:

(Girls’ Under-16 final): Dinara de Silva beat Ruvi Lewkebandara 6-1, 6-0. (Boys’ Under-16 final): Methwan Wijemanne beat Ganuka Fernando 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. (Mixed doubles pre quarter-finals): N. Vivekanandan and Ruwan Fernando beat Guyanga Weerasekera and Rukshika Wijesooriya 6-4, 0-6, 10-4.

(Men’s Doubles semi-finals): Chathurya Nilaweera and Thehan Wijemanne beat Ransath Peiris and Matheesha Nettasinghe 6-1, 6-0. Yasitha De Silva and Dhilvan Herath beat Ashen Silva and S. Udayachandran 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. (Girls’ Under-18 Doubles semi-finals): Nesangi Hemakumara and Vishmi Serasinge beat R Lewkebandara and N. Vivekanandan 7-6, 6-2.
