Discussions to provide fuel for fishermen at discounted price

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda engaged in a special discussion with the representatives of Indian Oil Company (IOC) at the Ministry of Fisheries, in order to prepare a programme to provide fuel to fishermen at a discounted price on Monday (27).

Representatives of Indian Oil Company said that the possibility is there to provide fuel at a discounted price than the prevailing price after the comparison of prices when the fuel from Sri Lankan harbour is issued to the filling stations. Besides, the filling stations in the Harbour belong to Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and issues may crop up when issuing fuel to these filing stations by their company. The representatives pointed out that if the permission is granted to run a filling station in the harbour premises to their company, they would explore the possibility to provide a litre of Diesel for Rs.351.

The Fisheries Minister said that it is essential to provide fuel relief to multi-day fishermen and single-day fishermen who have been severely affected due to the increased price of fuel and he hopes the cooperation of Indian Oil Company in this regard. The Minister added that he would take measures to get the cooperation of the Power and Energy Ministry in order to continue this process without creating a confrontation with Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Fisheries Ministry Secretary Indu Rathnayake, Fisheries Department Director General Susantha Kahawaththa and the representatives of Indian Oil Company attended.
