Dissanayake, Pathirana Best Lifters at Nationals

The National Weightlifting Championship 2022 organised by Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation with Niyagama Divisional Secretariat and Galle District Weightlifting Association was held at Poodiwela National School, Galle on February 11 to 13. The tournament consisted of open, youth, junior and senior categories for men’s and women’s events.

T.M.N.S. Dissanayake of Galgamuwa Weightlifting Club and R.G.N.S. Pathirana of Jayanthi College, Polonnaruwa were adjudged the Best Lifters in the Men’s and Women’s event in Youth category respectively.

The Men’s Junior Lifter award was won by H.M.N.S. Dissanayake of Galgamuwa Weightlifting Club while K. Geethika of Galle Weightlifting Association won the Women’s Lifter award.

S.W.K.R. Somathilaka who represented the Sri Lanka Army became the Best Lifter in the men’s senior category while R.L.S.R. Laksarani of Galle District Weightlifting Association was crowned as Best Lifter in women’s category.

The Overall Open Men’s Championship was won by Trinity Weightlifting Club, Kandy and the Sri Lanka Army became runner up while University of Jaffna and the Sri Lanka Air Force teams secured Open Women’s titles as champions and runner-up respectively. Galgamuwa Weightlifting Club won the Men’s Youth Championship and Jayanthi Vidyalaya, Polonnaruwa emerged runner-up. Sevanapitiya Maha Vidyalaya won the Women’s Youth Championship and Kadawalawewa Maha Vidyalaya, Polonnaruwa emerged runner-up.

Galle District MP Sampath Athukorala, the Director of Sports (Southern Province) Erandi Umayanga, Provincial Council Assistant Director of Sports Sarath Kumara de Silva and the Secretary of Niyagama Divisional Mrs. P.G.S. Sajivani distributed medals and trophies for the winners.
