The Sri Lanka Police today issued a public advisory urging citizens to safeguard their financial information amid a rise in online scams linked to the growth of digital transactions.
Police cautioned that hackers can exploit carelessness to steal money and stressed the importance of following simple safety measures:
- Maintain confidentiality: Never share ATM PINs, banking passwords, or OTPs (One‑Time Passwords) with anyone, including family or friends. Banks will never request these details.
- Protect OTP access: Do not disclose OTP numbers received on mobile phones, as they act as the key to accounts.
- Monitor card use: Ensure transactions are done in front of you and avoid allowing cards to be taken away at shops or restaurants.
- Keep CVV secret: Do not reveal the three‑digit CVV number on the back of cards.
- Activate alerts: Set up SMS alerts to receive immediate notifications of any deductions from accounts.
