Dr. Shafi acquitted of all charges in Kurunegala MC

Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen who was accused of performing illegal sterilisation surgeries and having links to terrorist organisations was acquitted from all charges by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The CID had forwarded the excerpts of investigations conducted over a five year period to the Attorney General, and accordingly, the Attorney General had informed Court and the Criminal Investigation Department in writing that there will be no further action against him as there is no evidence to file criminal charges against him. Investigations conducted by CID revealed that almost 130 mothers who complained to the Criminal Investigation Department accusing Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen of performing illegal sterilisation surgeries on them have conceived children later.

Also, two mothers came forward on two occasions to get tests done to confirm whether the fallopian tubes were blocked, and according to those tests, it was revealed that their fallopian tubes were not blocked.

After Dr.Shafi was arrested by the Kurunegala Police on May 24, 2019, he was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department on the orders of the then Acting Inspector General Chandana Wickramaratne for further investigation.

He was detained and investigated under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for about a month.

After such investigations, the department reported to court that since there are not sufficient facts to maintain the case against Dr.Shafi under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, he will be released from those charges and will be investigated for the offences under the Penal Code.

Additional Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department Thusith Mudalige, Assistant Superintendent B.S.Thisera and other officials had earlier complained against Ven.Athuraliye Rathana Thera and the then Kurunegala Hospital’s Deputy Director for obstructing and threatening during the investigation.
