Drug trafficking gang attacks sportsman in Kandy

Police investigations have revealed that the incident of a former boxer being abducted in Kandy Hospital Lane, beaten with iron rods and dumped in the stadium near the Hanthana Sulang Kapolla was the result of a conflict between two gangs engaged in drug trafficking.

The 22-year-old, who was once well-known talented boxer and was assaulted was arrested with 10 grams of drugs and produced in court subsequent to being arrested and remanded and had been recently been released on bail, police said.

After the drug heroin which was taken into custody was sent to the Government Analyst, the police had received the report recently and it had confirmed that there had been eight grams of heroin drugs. The verdict in the case will be given at the Kandy High Court next month.

This young man had been abducted from near his home on Hospital Lane, Kandy at about 8 pm on December 12 by four persons who had arrived in a three-wheeler.

His relatives said that when the young man was discovered at the Sulang Kapolla stadium near the top of the Hanthana mountain, his limbs had been broken, in the assault. They also said thatsome burn injuries were apparent on his body.

The youngster’s mother said that while her son had been asleep, an individual among a group of persons who had come in two three-wheelers had told her to send her son out since there was a problem to be discussed about a motor bike. When he came out, he had been assaulted and put into one three-wheeler and taken away, the mother further said. A relative of the young man who was abducted in a three-wheeler said that they searched for him all over the Kandy town but did not find him though later they discovered he had been dumped at the Sulang Kapolla stadium.

This young man’s father had died sometime ago. Police said that there are three cases filed in Court, against his mother for having drugs in her possession. The brother and sister of the youngster had also been taken into custody by the police for having drugs in their possession, produced in court and later remanded.

The young man who had been assaulted had been a talented boxer some time back and toured countries such as Malaysia and India as a sportsman.The police suspect that he had been abducted by a main gang involved in drug trafficking in Bogambara area.

The Crimes Division of the Kandy Police are carrying out further investigations.
