Weligama Police arrested a drunk driver who assaulted two police officers who were on duty near the Weligama Polathumodara railway crossing on Tuesday (5) evening. Investigation has revealed that the drunk driver is an army corporal serving at the Mullaitivu Wadwuaka camp.
Police constable Shanta (84775) who was injured after being attacked by the soldier and is attached to the Weligama Police Station has been admitted to the Walana District Hospital.
The arrested 33-year-old army soldier was drunk driving a small lorry from Denipitiya area towards Polatumodara area.
Police constables J.M.A.Shantha and K.S.Gimhan attached to the Weligama Police station and were on duty at the Polathumodara Railway crossing have checked the lorry, based on a suspicion regarding the behaviour of the driver.
It was discovered that the driver was drunk. The police said that the soldier who was driving the truck has kicked the police officers when they were going to enforce the law against the driver.
This soldier is a resident of Akuressa Paraduwa area.Police said that he was on leave at that time.
The soldier was later arrested by Police.
A senior police officer said that the facts against the suspect will be reported to the court for obstructing the duty and assaulting the Police officers and driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was to be produced before the Kotawila Magistrate’s Court.
