DSS thrash Mahanama 39-5 in Battle of the Golds

D. S. Senanayake College extended their dominance over the traditional rivals Mahanama College by pulling off a convincing 39-5 victory in the 15th Annual Battle of the Golds Inter-Schools Under-19 rugby encounter played at Havelock Park yesterday.

D. S. Senanayake, who started the game as clear favourites, lived upto expectations and dominated the proceedings from the kick-off as they collected their points from two goals and five tries after having led 15-5 at half time.

D. S. Senanayake produced the brand of rugby that they had dished out in the ongoing ‘A’ Division League Tournament and completely rattled Mahanama, who are competing in the Division One Segment ‘B’ Tournament.

The star player for D. S. Senanayake was their speedy wing three quarter Janidu Wijeratne who led the way with two early tries and added the third in the second half for his second hat-trick of the current season following his heroics in the match against St. Anthony’s College.

Mahanama scored their solitary try in the 22nd minute to reduce the margin to 5-10 at that stage but thereafter it was all D. S. Senanayake as number eight Shamal Maleesha and fly half Malith Peiris scored two tries each.

However, Peiris was successful in converting only two tries, which anyway did not make any difference as D. S. Senanayake ran out easy winners in the end.
