Anuradhapura district Parliamentary Election candidate Duminda Dissanayake pointed out that the subsidies provided to the maize farmers in the district have been suspended.
“Last year, we provided assistance for the cultivation of maize to 20,000 farming families. This year we were prepared to extend this support to 30,000 families, but now the project is no longer active. We regret that the NPP prevented us from implementing this project for those 30,000 families. If we had won the last election, these 30,000 families would have received this aid. However, those families are now deprived of that benefit,” said Duminda Dissanayake, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, former Member of Parliament, and leader of the New Democratic Front’s candidate team for the Anuradhapura District in the 2024 Parliamentary Election.

In response, Dissanayake remarked, “We can’t always get everything, can we? Not every day is Christmas or New Year. Let’s wait for about six months.”
He continued his remarks at the public gathering, saying:
“There are farmers here in Anuradhapura who survive for a whole year on the income from the maize harvest during the Maha season. Sometimes, this is the only crop they have, and it is with the income from this harvest that they manage to send their children to school and sustain themselves year-round. This crop is essential for their livelihood, so we are pleased that we had the opportunity to empower these farmers.”
