National Organiser of the Sarvajana Balaya Party and leader of the Kandy district group of candidates Dilum Amunugama said that the opposition has always tried to criticise a government elected by the people and this should change in the next Parliament.
He said that the responsibility of taking the country forward not only lies with the ruling party but also with the opposition and the opposition has been working in our country for four decades without understanding this.
Amunugama also had the following to say, while addressing a rally in the Udunuwara area of Kandy recently:
“The opposition group appointed in Parliament in this country has never allowed a government elected by the people to continue working. It was the same when we were in the opposition. If the people of other countries give power to a government for five years, the opposition will support the implementation of their manifesto. The opposition is not there to oppose everything the government does. No opposition in our country had the idea that the opposition is a part of Parliament that helps to run the country.
“There are two sections in the Parliament: the ruling party and the opposition. The government has a responsibility to run the country and the opposition also has a responsibility to support them. It does not matter if the opposition attempts to take over the government. But trying to bring down the country and take over government power is completely wrong.
“When a government was in operation, the opposition did not look at the good or the bad but simply opposed the government. Except Prabhakaran, everyone else disliked war. However, when the government was going to end the war, the opposition in our country criticised that effort by saying that it was ”going to Medawachchiya instead of Kilinochchi.” This is the habit of the opposition in our country. After the election results, we have to accept the government and the opposition. The responsibility of both the government and the opposition is to move the country forward. We have not seen such an opposition in recent history.”
