e-cigarettes posing challenge for society, State – Excise Chief

Excise Department Commissioner General M. J. Gunasiri stated that e-cigarettes are currently posing a multitude of challenges for both society and the Government, leading to a substantial loss in tax revenue.

He elaborated that these particular cigarettes are packed with a substantial level of nicotine, posing a greater threat to the human body compared to a standard cigarette. Gunasiri emphasized that e-cigarettes are highly habit-forming and have the potential to lead to lung cancer.

e-cigarettes emit a pleasant aroma unlike traditional cigarettes. Additionally, they are disguised as power banks, smart watches, perfume bottles, and various other products, which can make them challenging to recognize.

It is alarming that e-cigarettes are predominantly affecting school students and young people, posing a significant threat due to the rapid proliferation of this trend.

Additionally, this type of e-cigarette is hazardous and has been banned by the World Health Organisation and the US.
