Earth mound collapse restricts traffic on Deniyaya – Viharahena road

Traffic on the Deniyaya – Viharahena road was obstructed after a mound of earth collapsed on the main road near the little bridge yesterday morning due to the adverse weather condition.

Deniyaya Police with the support of area residents removed the earth mound fallen on the raod due to a landslide, but the mound continues to collapse again. The removal of the earthen mound has been temporarily stopped until the rain situation ends.

The water level of the Nilwala river had risen rapidly from Thursday due to the continuous torrential rains that fell in Akuressa, Deniyaya, Morawake and Pitabeddara in the last few days.

On the 28th, the Nilwala river overflowed and flooded all the low-lying areas. Traffic has been suspended on many roads due to the flood situation from yesterday.

The Kamburupitiya – Matara, Kamburupitiya – Akuressa, Kamburupitiya – Mulatiyana, Kamburupitiya – Matara via Kadduwa, Kamburupitiya – Matara via Vitiyala, Akuressa – Matara main road, Akuressa – Kadduwa – Matara via Malimbada, Kamburupitiya – Akuressa via Athuraliya, Charassa – Bangama, Akurassa and traffic on the Yakkalamulla via Galle, Weligama-Imaduwa via Kokmaduwa, Akuressa-Siyambalagoda roads has also been suspended.

At 5.16 am on the 29th, the value of the Panadugama water gauge in the Nilwala river has risen to 7.35 meters.The magnitude of a major flood is 7.5 meters.

In the Akuressa Divisional Secretariat, 110 houses were damaged, 482 people were affected, five houses were partially damaged, 31 businesses were damaged, and 87 families and 307 people were affected in Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat.

Matara District Secretary Y. Wickramasiri said steps have been taken to provide immediate relief to affected people in the Matara district.
