EC to announce date for LG polls after A/L examination

The Election Commission (EC) said the announcement on holding of the Local Government (LG) Elections will be made after the GCE Advanced Level examination ends.

The EC stated yesterday (2) that if the official announcement of the LG polls holding date is made during the ongoing A/L examination time period, the examination activities may be disturbed.

The term of office of all other LG Bodies ended in March 2022 except for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha. However, due to the crisis that took place in the country, LG elections could not be held and their term of office was extended by one year.

Thereafter, holding of the LG elections was postponed on many occasions and after hearing a fundamental rights petition filed before the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court ordered the EC to conduct the LG polls as soon as possible.

Accordingly, the EC had previously stated the LG Bodies will conduct the elections in the first half of 2025.The reason behind announcing the date of LG polls after completion of A/L examination is if the dates are notified during the examination period, the candidates may start their election campaign activities which will result in the A/L examination being disturbed.
