The Election Commission stated that severe legal action will be taken against any political parties or groups who will use any undue influence by engaging in any type of threatening, taking bribes or giving bribes to prevent voters from casting their ballots in a free and fair manner on the day of the 2024 General Election.
The Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake who joined a special media briefing yesterday morning (1) said that the Election Commission has the power to take such legal action according to the Parliamentary Election Act number 01 of 1981 sections 66 to 88.
Therefore, the Election Commission has requested all relevant political parties or groups not to attempt to carry out such illegal activities.
The Commissioner General of Elections said that the Election Commission’s attention has been directed on various suggestions and requests that are being made by civil groups in connection with the date assigned to hold the General Election on November 14.
