Economic collaboration, investment opportunities will grow

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake embarked on a four-day State visit to the People’s Republic of China yesterday.

This visit, taking place from January 14 to 17, is undertaken at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the visit, President Dissanayake will hold discussions with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, as well as engage with other senior Chinese officials to strengthen diplomatic ties.

The agenda includes key focus areas such as technology, agriculture, and poverty alleviation.

The President is also scheduled to visit strategic facilities and participate in high-level business forums aimed at enhancing economic collaboration and investment opportunities.

A series of bilateral agreements to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China will be signed during the visit.

This marks President Dissanayake’s second international state visit since assuming office and is considered a pivotal step in fortifying the longstanding partnership between Sri Lanka and China.

It is anticipated that the visit will significantly advance bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun, during his regular press conference on January 10, said the upcoming visit by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is of great importance to the development of China–Sri Lanka relations.

He further said, “During the visit, President Xi Jinping will hold talks with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Premier Li Qiang and Chairman Zhao Leji of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress will also meet with the Sri Lankan President.

“China and Sri Lanka have long been each other’s friend and close neighbour. Since our two countries established diplomatic ties in 1957, the bilateral relationship has stood the test of the changing international landscape, always maintained sound and steady growth, and set up a fine example of friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries different in size.

“China stands ready to work with Sri Lanka through the upcoming visit to carry forward our time-honoured friendship, deepen political mutual trust, and expand high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and practical cooperation in various fields for continuous new progress in advancing the China–Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership featuring sincerity, mutual support and everlasting friendship as well as more benefit for the two peoples.”
