Eggs could be sold at Rs. 35, says AIETA

The All-Island Egg Traders’ Association (AIETA) expressed concern over the day-to-day increase in egg prices and said according to a recent spot check of poultry farms that they had conducted, eggs could be easily sold for less than Rs. 35 each.

Speaking to the Daily News, AIETA Secretary Anurasiri Marasinghe said currently egg producers spend between Rs. 23 to Rs. 25 to produce an egg for the market and therefore it is not ethical to sell an egg at Rs. 40 or Rs. 45.

He said the cost of an egg has dropped when compared with last year’s cost and therefore it is unethical for middlemen to increase the selling prices of eggs.

He further said the sudden egg shortage in the market has been reported due to many reasons such as large-scale businessmen storing eggs in cold rooms to enable them to sell the eggs at high prices during the forthcoming festive season.
