Elderly Chena worker killed in a wild Elephant attack in Sigiriya region

On Sunday October 20, 2024 at night, a man of around 60-years-old, who was working in the Chena cultivation in Wewalawewa, Alakolawewa area was attacked by a lone wild elephant, and he died almost instantaneously.

The police investigation so far has revealed that this person was a resident of Hatton area. He had come here looking for work some time ago. Having found employment as a labourer, he had been working in this Chena cultivation since.

However, on Sunday whilst he was at work, a lone wild elephant had rushed in and attacked him, killing him almost right away, the police added.

Currently, the body lies in the mortuary of Dambulla, Veera Denzil Kobbekaduwa base Hospital and the police said that the post-mortem examination would be conducted on Monday October 21.

Residents also fear for their lives, as the invasion of wild elephants has increased in Sigiriya and surrounding areas.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Sigiriya Police in this regard.
