Mahesh Senanayake, Kandy District candidate for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), emphasised the importance of selecting the most qualified representatives for the district’s development. Addressing a public gathering in Kandy, Senanayake highlighted the need for knowledgeable, honest, and capable individuals with concrete plans to address essential development needs.
Reflecting on public dissatisfaction with the previous 225 members of Parliament, he remarked, “People’s frustration is not about simply replacing old members with new faces or older representatives with younger ones. The public demands genuine, skilled individuals who will work earnestly for the country.”
He pointed out that Parliament holds the responsibility for creating laws, policies, and financial oversight. “Parliament should consist of professionals with knowledge and expertise, not just popular figures or associates of powerful people. Sending corrupt or criminal elements to Parliament has led to significant setbacks,” he said, citing examples of past representatives from Kandy accused of corruption and criminal activities.
Senanayake further expressed concerns about Kandy’s environmental and health issues. “Kandy is now one of the cities with the highest air pollution in the country. Most patients visiting hospitals suffer from pollution-related illnesses. But who among the elected officials has addressed this issue?” he questioned. Kandy, he added, holds historical and cultural significance as Sri Lanka’s second capital, home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. “Development in Kandy must preserve these values while protecting its natural environment,” he stressed.
Urging the people to vote thoughtfully in the upcoming election, Senanayake said, “This time, we need to elect competent individuals with genuine plans and commitment to development. The SJB proposes a Parliament free from corruption and filled with capable representatives. We offer a structured, progressive plan for village and national development and have fielded the best candidates for Kandy.”
He assured his commitment to the SJB’s policies and his alignment with the vision of the party leader, Sajith Premadasa. “Our mission is singular: to restore Kandy’s heritage and pride by addressing its current challenges with effective solutions. We look forward to the highest support from Kandy for the SJB, which is the sole path to truly rebuilding the country,” he concluded.
